Fish Habitat & Irrigation

The fish habitat is clearly very important as we are looking after a living creature which will be providing nutrients for our plants.  It's also important to ensure the fish don't run out of water which can happen in non CHOP systems.

As we will be rearing trout it's important they have a rich air supply and current to swim against.  Adults grow to approximately 12-15 inches at which point they can be sold and eaten.  We will be rearing our own fingerlings to ensure we have a good supply of young adults to place in the larger fish pond.  Given the size of our grow beds we will be using a round 5000 gallon tank which will give the fish plenty of room to swim about and hopefully enjoy a good life.

The irrigation will be taken as an overflow from the adult and fingerling fish tanks, this ensures they can't run out of water and any sediment at the bottom of the main tank is lifted the pipe and filtered through the media bed and floating beds.  The media will grow bacteria which will turn ammonia from the fish in to nitrogen for the plants and by the time the water is returned to the main fish tank there will be little or no ammonia left.
